60 Years of Excellence: St Ignatius College’s Unforgettable Anniversary Ceremony

In a breathtaking display of history, pride, and joy, St Ignatius College recently held its much anticipated 60th Anniversary Closing Ceremony on its campus, bringing together generations of students, faculty, alumni, and community members for a day filled with celebration and nostalgia.

The event, which took place on Sunday the 2nd of July 2023, was a testament to the remarkable journey of St Ignatius College over the past six decades and served as a vibrant reminder of the college’s unwavering commitment to excellence in education and shaping the futures of countless individuals. From the moment attendees arrived, they were immersed in an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation. The campus was adorned with banners showcasing the college’s rich heritage, while the college’s marimba and jazz band provided some pleasant live music to set the tone for a beautiful day of celebration.

The event kicked off with mass which was led by His Lordship Rt Rev. Bishop Mupandasekwa C.Ss.R. The Education Delegate of the Jesuit Province of Southern Africa and Rector of St Georges College, Fr Joe Arimoso SJ delivered the homily for the day where he talked about the importance of gratitude. Fr Arimoso also emphasised the role of the College in the society.


“We run schools to transform societies. Any school can produce doctors and engineers but the question is what kind of person will that engineer be to the society…. This (societal values) is what a school like St Ignatius seeks to address.”

After mass, our Guest of Honor, who was the Vice President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Hon. General (Rtd) Dr. C.G.D.N. Chiwenga, commended the College for continuing to lead in the provision of quality education for over 6 decades of its existence. The vice president also made a generous donation of $60 000 towards the College’s development projects.

Upon conclusion of formal proceedings, the focus then shifted to the sports fields where attendants were treated to a hive of fun activities which included horse riding, quad biking and captivating live music which was provided by renowned musician Sulumani Chimbetu.  

All in all, the event was a joyous celebration of the St Ignatius College’s continued excellence and an appreciation of how far the College has come. This remarkable celebration will forever be etched in the hearts of all who attended, leaving a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
